BANGALORE : A large number of teachers staged a protest demanding a hike in their pay on Teachers’ Day in the city on Monday. PU College teachers observed a hunger strike at Freedom Park. Later, the teachers submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner. A member from PU College Lecturers Association said that teachers in Karnataka are paid less. “Here, beginners are paid Rs. 19,175, whereas in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra, teachers are paid Rs. 30,000,” he complained. There are many disparities in implementing the fourth and fifth pay commission. Government had  constituted a committee to look into this matter. “The committee submitted its report two months back. But no action has been taken so far,” he added. The members of the Federation of Karnataka State Unaided Schools/ Management  observed Teachers Day as “Black Day”. They demanded  aid for all the unaided schools and PU colleges that were started during 1987 and 1995 as per state government’s order. Teachers also assembled in front of Mahatma Gandhi Statue at Anand Rao Circle. They warned to stage protest throughout the state.
