Support from political parties continued to pour in for Express photographer Albin Mathew, who was assaulted by a senior professor on IIT Madras campus while he was discharging his professional duties on Tuesday.
Suspecting an “ulterior motive” behind the attack on Albin Mathew, who went to the campus to cover the suicide of a girl in a hostel that was supposed to provide her security, CPI State Secretary D Pandian, on Friday, said it was condemnable that journalists were assaulted in an attempt to stifle their democratic duty. In this case, reports said that the assault by the professor, Prakash M Maiya, led to bleeding injuries.
Moreover, that the police have registered cases on the journalist, who was himself assaulted, was regrettable. He demanded the truth be found and action be taken against the perpetrators.
The Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) said the incident of assault on the lensman was “shocking” and “condemnable”. While an FIR on the professor was registered after a protest by media persons, police unfortunately registered a case on Albin without conducting a detailed inquiry and based on the false complaint by IIT officials.
The party wished to point out that IIT Madras was not beyond law. Such acts to stifle the freedom of the media would always be condemned by democratic forces such as the VCK. “The party would plunge into direct intervention if the police fail to initiate an independent inquiry and take proper action against the culprits,” said State Secretary Vanni Arasu.
