With the main entry points to Parambikulam Tiger Reserve (PTR) being located in the core areas of the two tiger reserves in Tamil Nadu that were shut after the Supreme Court order, the Forest Department is now imploring the government to open the alternative entrance from the Nelliyampathy Forest Range (NFR).
According to wildlife warden K. Vijayanand, there is no public transport system in the Parambikulam Tiger Reserve except for two bus services of the Kerala and Tamil Nadu transport corporations. “About 80 square kilometres of the Nelliyampathy Reserve Forest (NRF) of Nenmara Forest Division has already been notified as a part of PTR. NRF has a road that currently caters only to the jeeps of the Forest Department,” he says.
The track running along the Nelliyampathy Reserve Forest is narrow and not a scalable option for buses and other large vehicles. T. Prabhu, a local tribal working as a temporary Anti Poaching Watcher in Parambikulam Tiger Reserve, says, “We should have an alternative route to gain entry to the PTR so that we can reopen the reserve for the tourists.
