VELLORE: A tonne of rice, allegedly smuggled to Andhra Pradesh was seized by officials attached to the divisional supply office near Katpadi on Saturday.The officials conducted raids for the past two days at Katpadi railway junction following complaints that ration rice was being smuggled in trains.During a search in passenger trains from Puducherry to Tirupathi and Chennai to Tirupathi, bags of rice were found hidden below the seats. Sources said, the rice bags were being smuggled to Andhra Pradesh. Gold, Silver BurgledGold jewellery and silver utensils were burgled from a house near Ambur.Gopal (66), a retired EB employee and his wife Lalitha (58) returned after a few days and they were shocked to see the lock of the door broken. They later found that 2.5 sovereigns of gold jewellery and silver utensils, all estimated around `33,000, were missing from the house.Pallikonda police registered a case.Landlords Arrested Two persons were arrested for throwing out a tenant’s property, near Vellore on Sunday.Sampath (70) was living in a rented house for more than seven years at Lakshmipuram near Virudhampet. The owner of the house, Mahendhran (32) along with his friend Jaiganesh (34), took Sampath’s household items and left it in front of Sampath’s son’s house.Following this, Sampath filed a case with Virudhampet police that 63 sovereigns of gold jewellery and `15,000 cash were lost because of this. The cops arrested Mahendhran and Jaiganesh in this connection.Woman Among 3 HeldTwo persons including a woman, were arrested for various crimes in Vandavasi near Tiruvannamalai, on Saturday.Police found Babu (36) and Aadhikesavan (68) gambling. They were immediately arrested. Muniammal (48) of Venmandhai village was also arrested when she was found selling liquor in the same area.One Dead in MishapOne person died on the spot and one was injured in a mishap near Katpadi on Saturday evening. Panneerselvam (43) of Sumithrapalayam and his friend Govindharaj were on their way to Vellore. Near Peetukulam area close to Katpadi, their motorcycle was hit by a car from behind. Panneerselvam died on the spot and Govindharaj received injuries. Katpadi police registered a case.
