Bhopal: The District Education Officer of Madhya Pradesh’s Dewas town has banned the song Ghoomar from the film Padmavati from being used for cultural programmes in schools.
Dewas DEO Rajiv Suryavanshi issued the order following a plea from the Sri Rajput Karni Sena.
The district administration is not happy with the official’s action and plans to take action against him.
This comes as the film is roiled in controversy with its producers deferring its release following opposition from Rajput groups in various states.
Ghoomar song was released by the makers of the film recently and became instant hit with the youngsters.
News18 has obtained a copy of the letter written by Suryavanshi to principals of government schools. It says that Ghoomer has been banned in schools on the request of Sri Rajput Karni Sena so that the sentiments of Hindu community are not hurt.
“Please not include this song in any of the cultural events at your schools,” the letter instructed.
Sources claimed that the DEO belongs to Rajput community and went beyond official authority to act against the movie. Contacted by News18, Suryavanshi said, “I am not in a situation to comment on the issue right now.”
District Collector Ashish Singh was not reachable but sources in district administration claimed that the collector could issue punitive orders against Suryavanshi on Thursday.
On Wednesday, Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan at a public rally in Ujjain had announced that a biography on Rani Padmavati will now be included in school textbooks in the state. He reiterated his earlier stance of banning any screening of the movie in the state as it features scenes ‘disrespecting the queen’ and ‘tampering with history’.
