THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The city police control room which is on the path of renovation will get more staff and vehicles, if things move smoothly. The proposals to increase the strength of the control room staff and its vehicles are under the consideration of the authorities. ‘’The proposal to raise the number of staff had been submitted two months ago and that of increasing the number vehicles two weeks ago. We are waiting for approval from the top,” said control room Assistant Commissioner Bijoy. The proposal, if accepted, would lead to an increase in the number of staff to 350. At present, there are 250 personnel working in the control room in three shifts. A new office for the control room is being constructed on the second floor of the present office, which is functioning in the Cantonment police station building. The new control room, with more space, is meant to accommodate new equipment and cameras. As a part of modernising the control room, 192 more surveillance cameras would be installed in various traffic spots of the city, apart from the existing 42 cameras put in place as part of the first phase of expansion. Moreover, automatic speed detection radars have been installed in six spots. ‘’More men are needed to operate these cameras and equipment. Without an increase in the staff strength, the whole renovation and modernisation process would not have the desired results,” sources said. At present, 13 vehicles have been deployed for the control room operations and according to the proposal, the number has to be increased to 25. “Then, the functioning of the control room would become more effective,” said Bijoy. The control room, now functioning in a 600-square feet space, would shift to the new office with 2,600 square feet in a couple of months’ time.
