Pet Loss Poems
Share a pet loss poem to help them find comfort and solace. For a truly meaningful message, include a poem to help the other person reflect on their favorite memories and the impact their pet had on their life. Here are some special poems to help process their loss and bring peace: “They say memories are goldenwell maybe that is true.I never wanted memories,I only wanted you.A million times I needed you,a million times I cried. If love alone could have saved youyou never would have died.In life I loved you dearly,In death I love you still. In my heart you hold a placeno one could ever fill.If tears could build a stairwayand heartache make a lane,I'd walk the path to heavenand bring you back again. Our family chain is broken, and nothing seems the same. But as God calls us one by one,the chain will link again.”— Unknown, “I Only Wanted You” “Hope is the thing with feathersThat perches in the soul,And sings the tune without the words,And never stops at all,And sweetest in the gale is heard; And sore must be the stormThat could abash the little birdThat kept so many warm.I've heard it in the chillest land,And on the strangest sea;Yet, never, in extremity,It asked a crumb of me.”— Emily Dickinson, “Hope is the Thing with Feathers” “Do not stand at my grave and weep,I am not there; I do not sleep.I am a thousand winds that blow,I am the diamond glints on snow,I am the sunlight on ripened grain,I am the gentle autumn rain. When you awaken in the morning's hushI am the swift uplifting rushOf quiet birds in circled flight.I am the soft stars that shine at night.Do not stand at my grave and cry,I am not there; I did not die.”— Mary Elizabeth Frye, “Do Not Stand at My Grave and Weep” “They will not go quietly, the pets who’ve shared our lives. In subtle ways they let us knowtheir spirit still survives.Old habits still can make us thinkwe hear them at the doorOr step back when we dropa tasty morsel on the floor. Our feet still go around the placethe food dish used to be,And, sometimes, coming home at night,we miss them terribly. And although time may bring new friendsand a new food dish to fill,That one place in our heartsbelongs to them…and always will.”— Unknown, “They Will Not Go Quietly” “When I am gone, release me, let me go. I have so many things to see and do.You mustn’t tie yourself to me with tears. Be happy that we had so many years.I gave you my love, you can only guess how much you gave to me in happiness.I thank you for the love you each have shown, but now it’s time I traveled on alone. So grieve awhile for me if grieve you must. Then let your grief be comforted by trust. It’s only for awhile that we must part. So bless the memories within your heart.I won’t be far away. For life goes on. So if you need me, call and I will come.Though you can’t see or touch me, I’ll be near, and if you listen with your heart, you’ll hear. All of my love around you soft and clear. And then, when you must come this way alone, I’ll greet you with a smile and ‘Welcome Home.’”— Unknown, “When I’m Gone”
What to Write in a Pet Loss Card
Validate their grief and express your condolences. “The grief of a pet is similar to the grief of a relationship,” says licensed marriage and family therapist Denise Brady. Therefore, it’s important to let the other person know you care about them and empathize with the loss of their pet. Some example phrases include “I am deeply sorry for your loss” or “My heart goes out to you and your family.” Be sure to write in the first person to craft a more genuine message. For example, “I will miss your (pet’s name)” is more impactful than “your pet will be missed.”
Share a sweet memory of their pet to comfort them. Highlighting a happy memory with their pet can bring peace to the grieving family. You should “share the strength of what that animal has given [them],” according to marriage and family therapist associate Jacqueline House, LMFT-A, whether it’s mentioning something from a specific holiday, pet birthday, or trip to the park. “Sharing positive emotions can help [them] during the grieving process,” says House.
Offer support and let them know you’re here for them. When consoling someone who has just lost their pet, “treat the death as if it were a regular person…and be available and support them,” says therapist Ebony Eubanks, MSW, ACSW, CAMS-II. Let the grieving person know they can reach out at any time and that they’re not alone. To be extra supportive, specify how you can help them, whether it’s running errands on their behalf or bringing them food. Providing a listening ear or a shoulder to cry on is a simple gesture that goes a long way!
