HYDERABAD: With Union Grants Commission’s (UGC) decision to introduce objective-type questions in the third paper of the UGC-National Eligibility Test from the June session this year, the number of applicants from the state has been doubled as compared to the previous exam, held in December last year. The Osmania University UGC-NET centre has got more than 20,000 applications for the June session this year as compared to the 10,000 in December session last year.Speaking to Express, director of admissions and UGC-NET coordinator at Osmania University, T Krishna Rao, said they saw a steep rise in the number of applications for the June session with the change of pattern. The UGC conducts the NET examination in 94 subjects in both arts and science streams twice in a year- one in June and the other in December --except the language subjects.Out of the three papers, paper-I and paper-II comprise of objective-type questions only. Till the last exam, the paper-III comprised of essay type questions. The UGC has decided to convert paper-III of the NET exam into objective type from the June session this year. The UGC-NET Delhi also has received nearly 5 lakh applications for this session, according to Rao.“We used to fear to write the exam as we were not able to compete with the English or Hindi medium candidates. The new pattern will definitely test the candidates equally irrespective of the media," said K Giribabu, a post graduate in Economics from Osmania University.
