BANGALORE: The wait for India’s first Military Memorial will continue as the anticipated National Military Memorial (NMM) is still not completed.The memorial, scheduled to be completed before the Kargil Diwas, would take another three months of time.“More than 70 per cent of the work is completed and the remaining would be over within the next two to three months”, an NMM in-charge personnel said. Attributing the delay to legal hurdles and other protests, he said: “We would have been on time, if not for rumours of all the inflated number of trees that we were supposedly going to cut.” Sharing that they have already cut about four Eucalyptus trees to pave the way for the ‘Veeragallu’, officials said that they would approach the court to seek its assisstance on if more trees should be cut. “65-metre flag mast, which will be the highest in the country will be erected.” “The 75 feet Veeragallu is being made in Koira Quarry in Devanahalli Village”, Venkatesh, Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) engineer said. Sharing the cost of transport, he said that it would approximately cost `1.9 crores for the carving and transportation of the Veeragallu.The memorial which already sports a MIG 23 aircraft, Vijaynta Tank and an APC-BRT 60PB, will also display missiles such as Akash, Trishul and also a warship. Though their request has not yet been approved, NMM personnel stated that, they would display a scaled down version, in case they are unable to procure the 50 feet ship.Kargil DiwasIt has been 12 victorious years since the Kargil War.In memory of the victory and the brave martyrs, ‘Kargil Diwas’, will be held in Indira Gandhi Musical Fountain Park, which is also the site for the National Militiary Memorial (NMM) on Tuesday at 9.15 am. Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa will take part. A walkathon will be held, starting from Cubbon Park at 8.15 am.
