New Delhi: Some of India's top shooters, including London Olympics silver and bronze medallists Vijay Kumar and Gagan Kumar, will be competing in the 56th Senior National Shooting Championship, starting here on Tuesday.
Also vying for medals in their respective events will be Beijing Games gold medallist Abhinav Bindra, Athens Olympic silver medallist R V S Rathore, double trap ace Ronjan Sodhi and Joydeep Karmakar among others.
The women's field will see veteran Anjali Bhagwat, Suma Shirur, Heena Sidhu and Mampi Das, among others, competing for the top prize at the Karni Singh Shooting Ranges.
The 12-day event, which will conclude on December 30, will be organised by the Haryana State Rifle Association. A record 2300 shooters from 41 affiliated state rifle associations/units have confirmed their entries.
In the run-up to the tournament, there had been apprehension about the state of the range, which was renovated at a huge cost ahead of the 2010 Delhi Commonwealth Games, but National Rifle Association of India (NRAI) secretary Rajiv Bhatia said everything thing has been set in place.
"It is starting on Wednesday, and the range is ready to host the tournament," Bhatia told.
