The Mumbai Police on Wednesday arrested three persons for entering India illegally, a day after they intercepted a boat from Kuwait in the Arabian Sea near the Gateway of India. The police launched a probe after intercepting the boat with three people on board.
The boat was checked after it was anchored at the Gateway of India. Prima facie, nothing suspicious was found on the boat, he police said adding that the trio hails from Tamil Nadu.
It has been learnt that the boat Sumaram Chaitrali while conducting routine marine patrol from Gateway of India to the Light House area on Tuesday, noticed a boat moving suspiciously in front of Sassoon Dock in the Sank Rock area.
A Mumbai police team took immediate action and stopped the boat, which was later identified as belonging to Kuwait, named Abdula Sharif 1.
The three individuals have been identified as natives of Tamil Nadu’s Kanyakumari district. They are currently in police custody at Colaba police station.
The Mumbai police said the boat has been impounded and a case is registered. Further investigation is underway, the police added.
The incident has raised concerns over lapses in maritime security. In 2008, ten Pakistani terrorists entered into the Indian territory via sea route and launched a terror strike in Mumbai.
