Mumbai cops chase hit-and-run driver on bicycles
Chaganlal Ghule and M Lad nab accused after a 30-minute chase on their bicycles; rewarded with Rs 1,000 each.

Mumbai: A driver in a white sedan being chased by two cops on bicycles. Half-an-hour into the chase, the two cops on the cycles catch the accused in the car and good overcomes evil. While this would make for the perfect end of a high-adrenaline action movie, this was an incident in real life at Santacruz.

Late on Saturday night, head constable Chaganlal Ghule and constable M Lad from Santacruz police station saw 21-year-old Yogesh Buldani zipping past them and noticed that the white sedan he was driving was damaged. Finding it suspicious, both of them pursued Buldani for more than 30 minutes on their cycles, after which they caught him and began to question him. However, Buldani refused to oblige.

"A few minutes into the questioning, we received a call from the control room that a white sedan had rammed into five other cars on Khar Linking Road and the driver had escaped. We immediately contacted the control room and moments later Khar police came to the spot and arrested Buldani," said Ghule.

Spills the beans

After being taken to the Khar police station, Buldani admitted to the hit-and-run and was arrested. The police ruled out driving under the influence after medical reports indicated that there was no alcohol in his system.

"The youth had rammed his car into some parked cars. We arrested the accused under Sec 185 of Motor Vehicle Act," said an officer from Khar police station.

Meanwhile, when the constables were asked about their chase, Ghule added, "It was difficult for us to nab him as he was trying to escape and we were on our bicycles. But we chased him."

The constables have also been rewarded for their presence of mind and bravery. DCP (Zone IX) Pratap Dighavkar awarded both the cops a Rs 1,000 cash prize. "Our constables reacted very well in this situation. Even though, they were on bicycles they were able to nab the speeding culprit," said DCP Dighavkar.
