CHENNAI: Visual Communication is a course with increasing opportunities but few colleges in the city have the adequate infrastructure for practical study of the subject.Keeping this in mind, the SDNB Vaishnav College for Women in Chromepet inaugurated a new media block for the Visual Communication department of their institution. Built at a cost of Rs 3 crores, the building has facilities for television and photography development. Chief Guest P Dhansingh, sitting MLA at Pallavaram, inaugurated the building.Principal of the college, Dr G Rani, says, “We want to provide the best infrastructure possible for our students. This is a field with great potential. Our students are talented and we can bring this out with the help of the equipment we provide.” She added that the fee structure for the course was lower compared to other colleges in the city, at approximately Rs 35,000 per annum.The media block covers two floors, and has a computer lab, two edit rooms, a fully equipped TV production room and studio, a photography lab and studio, drawing rooms, a lecture hall and a preview hall to view student documentaries. A few ad films created by the students on campus were played. Head of the Department of Visual Communication said, “We expect our students to give the best of their talents, and you can see that they have.”Students of the department enthusiastically displayed the uses of the software and equipment they have been provided. A second year student, explaining the process of editing, said, “We learn Avid editing software. These are useful in the industry. We are also taught various shooting techniques.”There are currently around 85 students in the media department. Also on display were portfolios of the students, taken on photography tours in Kerala and Mahabalipuram. Elizabeth, a final year student, says, “We are provided professional cameras, and are given thorough training. We have learned software like Illustrator, Corel Draw, Photoshop and Dreamweaver, and this will help us be ready for various jobs.”The course was started at SDNB Vaishnav in 2008. Last year, three students were employed as graphic designers during campus placements. Aishwarya, another final year student, says, “We can see the number of opportunities our course gives us and we invite many more girls to join here. Now that the infrastructure has been enhanced, more can be done.”Speaking at the programme after inspecting the facilities, MLA P Dhansingh said he was happy to see the progress made by the college, as it was the third time he was visiting it. “There have been so many advancements for women in our state. From this college alone, 48,000 women have graduated. I am happy to be associated with such an institution,” he said.A new hostel was also inaugurated, with a capacity for a 100 students. The Secretary of the college, Chandrakant M Tolia, gave an overview of the present and future activities of the college, which includes plans for an indoor stadium and a new library. Chairperson Mamta D Bhatt welcomed the gathering.
