CHENNAI: Accusing a former top official of attempting to fudge documents on the alleged allotment of 323 ISDN phone connections to former Union telecom minister Dayanidhi Maran, which is now being probed by the CBI, staff of BSNL on Thursday gheraoed the Chief General Manger (CGM) of Chennai Telephones.By 11 am on Thursday, over 200 employees gheraoed the CGM at his office in Purasawalkam here. They alleged that MP Velusamy, former CGM of BSNL, had been visiting the office and engaged in tampering the papers linked to the controversial allotment. The alleged allotment of phone connections were made during Velusamy’s tenure. The staff engaged in slogan shouting and demanded action to halt Velusamy from visiting the premises. Even as the employees were demanding an audience with the CGM, police  led by Kilpauk Inspector of Police, S Muthukumar, arrived. The police official told Express that the CGM sought protection in view of the agitation. Police officials held talks with the protestors and took an assurance that their protest would be peaceful.Speaking to Express, C K Mathivanan, deputy general secretary of the National Federation of Telecom Employees (BSNL) Union, who led the agitation, alleged that Velusamy had been making unexplained visits to the office. “After retirement, what business does he have here? He even comes to the CGM’s chamber and goes through sensitive files. We have credible information that he is tampering and destroying certain documents, besides creating new ones to save his skin,” he alleged.Stressing that the law should take its course, the trade union leader wanted the BSNL management to be vigilant and stop the alleged efforts of the ex-official to tamper with papers. The trade union leaders held talks with the CGM over the issue. They urged him to take immediate steps to address the issue. The stir, however, continued till 5.30 pm.
