BHUBANESWAR: Three months after Umerkote MLA Jagabandhu Majhi was gunned down in cold blood and a month after Subash Gond was elected in his place, DGP Manmohan Praharaj on Monday said, the killer(s) has been identified. At the Fourth Commemoration of Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Commissionerate of Police, where he was the guest of honour, Praharaj said the there is credible evidence against the murderer(s). In the last session of the State Assembly, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had informed the House that Maoists were behind the killing. The Crime Branch of Police which is investigating into the September 24 murder had released the sketch of a person after the killing but no success has come its way after that.Reliable sources said, although operatives of CPI (Maoist) from Chhattisgarh are clearly behind the murder, it will be too premature to pin down any one of them given the structure of the outfit where decision making and execution are carried out at different levels by separate groups. “Even if some persons are identified, it is hard to conclude they are the only ones responsible for the murder,” police sources added. In fact, the assassination of Swami Lakshmanananda Saraswati is a case in point. The investigating agency, Crime Branch, has so far submitted two chargesheets but was directed by the Orissa High Court last year in August to file a fresh one after conducting further investigation into the incident.
