BHUBANESWAR: Infrastructure major Larsen and Toubro Limited has proposed to set up two mega thermal power projects of 2000 MW generation capacities each in Orissa. The projects are proposed to be undertaken in joint venture with the State Government.While the company has zeroed in on Dhamara in Bhadrak district for setting up one of the power plants, it is scouting for locations for its second unit. It is looking for sites within 100 km from Bhubaneswar across two to three districts. The visages of the joint venture with the Government are also to be determined though the investment proposed in the two plants would be to the tune of Rs 40,000 crore. “The proposals have been submitted and are under active consideration of the State Government,” President L&T Shailendra Roy told mediapersons here today.Roy, who was attending the ASSOCHAM investors conclave here, said that the company intends to make investments to the tune of over Rs 83,000 crore, mostly in the sectors of power, steel and aluminium. L&T has entered into an agreement with the State Government for establishing a three million tonne steel plant project at Paradip. The site has been identified for the project and the quantum of investment in the project would be to the tune of Rs 20,000 crore. It would require over 600 acres of land which is still to be identified, Roy said.The company, which has been a joint venture partner with Tata Steel, to develop the Dhamara deepwater sea port has also earlier proposed an aluminium plant in Raygada district in association with Dubai Aluminium. It has sought government’s help in speeding up the project.
