Thiruvananthapuram: A nun who took part in the protest against rape-accused Bishop Franco Mullackal has received a warning letter from her congregation for leading a life “against principles of religious life”.
Sister Lucy Kalapura had taken part in the protest by the nuns against Mullackal in September last year after a fellow nun accused him of repeated rape and sexual harassment.
Kalapura belongs to the Franciscan Clarist Congregation (FCC) based in Aluva. The FCC sent a letter to Sister Lucy as the first canonical warning with the threat of dismissal from the congregation.
Five nuns from the Missionaries of Jesus Congregation had protested at the High Court in Ernakulam, demanding the arrest of Franco Mullackal.
Termed Sister Lucy’s actions a “grave external scandal”, the FCC letter claimed she had harmed the church by violating principle of religious life by purchasing a car and publishing her collection of poems, Snehamazhayil, without seeking the permission of her superiors.
The letter has also looked down upon her choice to give interviews to news channels and write articles in non-Christian newspapers without prior permission.
"Through these articles, you belittled the Catholic leadership by making false accusations against it and tried to bring down the sacraments. You tried to defame the FCC. Your performance through social media as a religious sister was culpable arising grave scandal,” the letter stated.
It also stated that Sister Lucy had received several corrections and warnings from her superiors for improper behaviour and violations of religious discipline. Instead of correcting herself she is denying the allegation, the letter claims.
The letter asks her to offer explanation to Sister Ann Joseph, superior general of the congregation and to “correct her deeds”. Failing to follow these instructions, will lead to further action against her, warned the FCC.
