Kalinganagar (Orissa): An Assistant Sub-Inspector at the Kalinganagar police station in Orissa is battling for his life after he shot himself on Sunday.

The police officer, N C Samal, was a member of the police team that fired on tribals, killing 13 people, including a policeman.

The doctors treating him said the bullet passed through his head and he has sustained brain injuries. However, he is now out of danger.

According to CNN-IBN Orissa correspondent Jajati Karan, the Inspector was under pressure after the January 2 shooting and also had some serious family problems.

He wanted one of his unemployed sons to get a job and hence, thought his death could make sure that at least one of his two sons gets employed with the police force.

"I was under pressure. I thought if I kill myself, my son will get job so I did this," Samal said.

On January 2, the State police opened fire on local tribals protesting the takeover of their land by Tata Steel plant in Kalinganagar.

They were demanding better compensation from the state government for their land.

The incident has kicked-up much political dust. The Congress is asking for the removal of Chief Minister Navin Patnaik over the issue.
