New Delhi: Known for her compassion for animals, Bollywood hottie Isha Koppikar on Tuesday teamed with photographer Atul Kasbekar to shoot an ad campaign for raising awareness about the conditions of animals in zoos.
Koppikar is an ambassador for People for Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) and joins Rahul Dev and Amisha Patel in campaignng against the pitiful conditions of zoos in the country.
PETA believes that animals have rights and deserve to have their best interests taken into consideration, regardless of whether they are useful to humans.
The ad comes in the wake of the Bombay High Court order demanding improvements at the Mumbai Zoo. PETA had filed a case against the Mumbai zoo for failing to provide even the most basic care for its animals in October.
Acting on the findings of its inspection committee, the Bombay High Court had ordered several improvements at the zoo, which resulted in some animals being relocated.
Measures to improve the conditions of the animals include controlling the population of deer and exotic birds, training more security guards by PETA and visitors being barred from bringing food or plastic into the premises or teasing the animals.
The court has also directed the zoo not to acquire more animals unless it provides the existing ones with appropriate housing.
