CHENNAI : Corporation wards which fall under Saidapet and Theyagaraya Nagar constituencies in South Chennai have been chosen by the civic body for a pilot project to cover dustbins. The project envisions a better garbage disposal system for households in Chennai, by having garbage collected directly from the residents and dumped in large covered bins. This will eliminate the existing process of dumping trash in small dustbins occupying every nook and cranny of the city streets. Overflowing garbage bins and the unbearable stench emanating from them are also expected to be arrested.“We will examine the pros and cons of covering the bins at Saidapet and Theyagaraya Nagar before implementing it in the rest of Chennai,” a Corporation official said. “This is part of the ambitious ‘Cleaner Chennai’ mission.” The Corporation has started installing blue corrugated iron sheets to cover the new garbage bins. Conservancy workers on tricycles will collect garbage from residents and dump it in the covered bins, to be transferred to garbage lorries later. “A large garbage bin will be provided for every two or three streets in an area. This will pave the way for phasing out the large number of small dust bins,” another official said. Mayor Saidai S Duraisamy inspected Ward 141 at Theyagaraya Nagar on Tuesday, as part of his drive to visit Corporation wards to get an insight into the civic problems in each locality. According to sources, people complained of irregular clearing of garbage in a few places, while many expressed their woes about poor supply of water and overflowing drainage. Officials from Chennai Corporation, Metro Water, and the Electricity Board and councillors accompanied the Mayor during the drive.
