CHENNAI: Dearth of infrastructure facilities at government colleges was the key issue highlighted at a review meeting organised by State Minister for Higher Education P Palaniappan, here on Wednesday.Representatives of 62 government arts and science colleges, and seven educational colleges took part in the meeting chaired by Director for Collegiate Education Uma Rani.The heads of the institutions highlighted the mismatch in the student-teacher ratio due to the insufficient number of teaching and non-teaching staff. They also urged the government to address the need for additional classrooms, auditoriums, libraries and renovation of lab facilities and hostel facilities.Some of the representatives drew attention to encroachment of institution lands due to lack of proper compound walls and inadequate toilet facilities.According to a representative of a Salem-based arts college that caters to around 4,000 students, there is no toilet facility for men,.Another representative from Karur said that the college had only 40 classrooms against the required 70.
