Bhubaneswar: BJP will hold a two-hour 'rasta roko' across the country to protest against the hike in petrol and diesel prices and the UPA government's "failure" to hold the price line.
The 'rasta roko' would be held between 1100 hrs IST and 1300 hrs IST on Wednesday and party workers have been asked to organise the protests everywhere, party chief Rajnath Singh said.
BJP also would like to have its NDA allies to join the protest as the steep hike was bound to push up the prices of all other essential commodities.
"But care should be taken to ensure that school children, ambulances and people carrying dead bodies for cremation were not inconvenienced during the protest," he said.
"The UPA government has increased the prices of petrol and diesel for an unprecedented seven times within the last two years amounting to betrayal of the common masses," Singh said.
The price of petrol had risen by 45 per cent within the last two years while that of diesel had gone up by 49 per cent during the same period, he added.
Alleging that the UPA government at the Centre had "failed on all fronts", Singh said the people should want to know as to how the prices as also the rate of inflation had remained steady during the six-year NDA rule.
"Why have prices begun to rise after the UPA government came to power?" he asked while alleging that black marketers and profiteers are benefiting under the Congress-led regime.
The Sensex had crashed causing small investors to suffer big losses and for the first time in history, transaction in the share market came to a stop thrice, he claimed.
Union Finance Minister P Chidambaram's contention that it was a "manufactured crisis" was difficult to accept, he said.
He added that the government should investigate and identify those who were responsible for the market crash.
Training his guns on the Left parties, Singh said they were supporting the government inside Parliament while opposing it outside, which amounted to betrayal of the people.
The Left parties were only 'shedding crocodile tears' on the issue, he said.
"Some people had criticised BJP's 'Feel Good' assertion but there was no 'feel bad' Vajpayee's regime," he asserted.
