Initially, the group decided to spend the day at Queen’s Land, but settled to having fun at Elliots Beach.They landed on the beach around noon and hit the shoreline in a short while. They kept frolicking in the water in the vicinity of a notice board put up by the police, which said that bathing at the beach was banned as it was dangerous.In due course, Mohammed Ali was swept away by a giant wave.His friends waited for sometime thinking that Mohammed Ali was playing a prank. When they realised it was no joke, they approached the police beat in Elliots Beach.The information was rushed to Shastri Nagar police station and inspector M Sundaresan responded to the alert.The information had been passed on to the Coast Guard and Thiruvanmiyur Rescue Team was pressed into service to rescue the drowned. Fire and Rescue personnel were also called in for assistance.All the efforts turned futile and the boy could not be located till late night.The rescue was called off due to bad light.Inspector Sundaresan told Express that the boy did not know swimming but was so engrossed in having fun in the water, and had subsequently drowned. Meanwhile, some other youth attempted to take a dip in the sea ignoring the warning.
