New Delhi: The UPA Government is in for some serious southern discomfort.
The Dravida Munnettra Kazgham (DMK) - UPA’s ally from Tamil Nadu – has said that it will review its support to the Government over its stand on the disinvestment of the public sector undertaking, Neyveli Lignite Corporation.
The DMK, which supports the Government with 16 MPs, is against the disinvestment and DMK supremo and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister is ‘upset’ with the Centre’s decision to divest the NLC and not taking him into confidence while going ahead with the plans.
A carefully-worded statement released by M Karunanidhi said the party will review its options on whether to continue in the Union Government.
Karunanidhi said the Government is not in a position to accept the demands of the workers at Neyveli.
"When the Centre is unable to accept the NLC workers demand, we are considering whether we should continue in the UPA government and accept responsibility for the decision," he said.
He also said he had instructed the DMK Lok Sabha members to inform the party's stand to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.
The DMK government in Tamil Nadu is supported by the Congress.
The Centre had decided to disinvest 10 per cent stake in the NLC, thus opening up more faultlines between the DMK and the Tamil Nadu unit of the Congress party, which is still upset over the central leadership not insisting “hard enough” on being part of “minority” government in the state.
In fact, the state Congress leaders term as “political duplicity” the stand by DMK supremo and Chief Minister M Karunanidhi, who openly protested the NLC disinvestment and sent a missive to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh demanding a rollback on the decision.
