Jazz up your home this Diwali without pinching your wallet.

Diwali is just a couple of weeks away and you have barely any time to get your home organised, let alone renovate. But don't worry. You can still give your home a makeover and guarantee that your your family and friends will love the new look. What's more, you don't need to spend a bomb.

Colours of celebration

You would have loved to paint your home but now it's too late. Well, save the paint job for after Diwali. For now, deck your walls with whatever is at hand. If you have deep coloured floor rugs, try using them as wall rugs for that variation. Not only will your walls look less bare but the floor would look different too.

HOT TIP: Don't give away those old festive sarees. All you need to do is pleat the entire saree and drape it in scallops like a valance above white or off white sheers.

You could also jazz up your walls with stick-on rangolis. Use ones with bright festive colours like red, orange, yellow and even blue and green. These are freely available in any local market.

Shining stars

Diyas, lanterns and candles are a great way to brighten up your home. Try this: turn of all the lights and let these festive lights create that special warmth in your home.

HOT TIP: Broken bangles from your last year's Diwali outfit can be used to brighten up the place. Break the bangles into really tiny bits and put them into a transparent glass bowl. Place it in a niche in the wall with a spot light from above. The effect is dazzling.

Furniture fixes

New furnishings will cost you a fortune and besides there isn't too much time to get anything made. So simply add on a throw in an interesting festive colour and bring a dull piece of furniture to life.

HOT TIP: Good quality grocery bags make really neat lampshades. Fold the brown paper bag into sections but don't press the folds too much. Cut out shapes from the bag and decorate the bag with mirrors, beads and sequins. Then hang it upside down with a bulb in it.

Try rearranging your furniture. This probably sounds simple but is in fact not so easy especially once you have fixed places for everything. The easiest thing to do would be to interchange the place of the dining area and the living area.

Throw on a couple of jute floor mats. You can spice things up with a splash of colourful embroidered and embellished cushions to make your guests comfortable.

A festive welcome

Last, but definitely not the least, prepare a welcome for your guests. Hang up a beautiful lantern to invite goddess Lakshmi into your home and draw a colourful rangoli at your doorstep. If you have never drawn a rangoli before, may be you should try the rangoli stencil kits. They are pretty easy to follow.

What's your reaction?
