As many as 25 Dalit families of Cuttack’s Kandarpur area have fled their village after they came under attack for protesting forceful occupation of their land by locals.
Currently taking shelter in the City, the Dalit members knocked the doors of the Odisha Human Rights Commission (OHRC) here on Friday.
The Dalit members said they have been hounded out from their village Athanga under Kandarpur Police limits of Cuttack because they tried to hold on to their land. The locals want a portion of their land for building a club.
Submitting a memorandum to the commission, the womenfolks of the Dalit families said they reported the matter to Kandarpur Police but they paid no heed at all. Subsequently, a memorandum was submitted to Cuttack DCP Praveen Kumar too.
Kusum Kabati, one of the petitioners, said some of the upper caste members had succeeded in grabbing at least four decimal of their land for a temple construction, but when the Government decided to build a road through that patch, the Dalit owners got compensation.
However, now the upper caste families have allegedly been mounting pressure on the Dalits to part with another patch of land to build a club. When they were refused, the Gram Sabha was convened on July 15 and it passed an order in favour of the club, the petitioners said.
The Dalits prayed for security and justice from the OHRC.
