CHENNAI: The Prince of Arcot, Nawab Mohammed Abdul Ali, on Tuesday appealed to Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa to handover the land and facilities of the Government Madrasa-e-Azam Higher Secondary School for Boys, located on the arterial Anna Salai, to a private management as the building was now in a ‘dilapidated and crammed’ state. In a statement here, he suggested that the school be handed over to the Prince of Arcot Endowments and said that the Anjuman-e-Himayath-e-Islam, a historic institution in Chennai, had agreed in principle to renovate, reconstruct, administer and improve the school with its funds and relieve the government of the burden and responsibility. He said that the roof of the main school building, had in an earlier occasion, collapsed and now a portion of the building had also collapsed during the recent rains.“If repairs are not attended, the building will further collapse and cause loss of human lives and property. It certainly does not reflect well to the credit of the Tamil Nadu Government that such a state of affairs should prevail in a government-run school,” Abdul Ali said. The strength of students in the school, which was meant for the minority community in particular, had gone down considerably over the years due to lack of proper education and the pass rate was ‘abysmally low’, he added. He also recalled that the land and building for the establishment of the school, aimed at promoting education among poor and middle-class familie s— predominantly but not exclusively for Muslim children — was provided in 1849 by the Nawabs of the Carnatic, the ancestors of the Prince of Arcot.
