Big players tick off 8-party alliance
Congress, BJP says alliance claiming to be an alternative to them will fail; Left says no Third Front without it.

New Delhi: The country’s main political parties on Wednesday snubbed the new alliance formed by eight regional parties with the Left parties calling it an “electoral get-together” and the BJP an “illusion”.

The Congress said it was "not perturbed" by the alliance. "If there is a healthy opposition we will emerge more successful than before", party spokesperson Jayanti Natrajan said.

The CPI-M said the front had been formed for elections and didn’t have clear ideas or programmes. "It is just an electoral get together with no specific programmes and ideas. The coming together of these parties has no relevance as it will not help in development of a proper third front in the country," CPI-M leader M K Pandhe told PTI.

CPI General Secretary A B Bardhan said "disparate elements" would fail to work as a credible “Third Front”. "A Third Front has to emerge through common struggle with ideas, programmes and policies forged during the struggle. You cannot just get together to form a third front to fight the BJP and the Congress," he said.

Forward Bloc leader Debabrata Biswas said "there cannot be any third front in the country without the Left, which has been fighting the neo-economic policies of successive governments since 1991."

BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad said the alliance was "a classic illusion" and a Third Front, which claimed to be an alternative to the Congress and the BJP, had no future.

TDP’s Chandrababu Naidu, AIADMK’s J Jayalalithaa, Samajawadi Party’s Mulayam Singh, Asom Gana Parishad’s Brindavan Goswami, Indian National Lok Dal’s Omprakash Choutala, Jharkhand Vikas Morcha’s Babulal Marandi, MDMK’s Vaiko and K J Thomas of Kerala Congress agreed to form the alliance in Hyderabad on Monday. None of these parties is in power in their state.
