New Delhi: Congress has won the by-election to the Ullal Assembly seat in Karnataka's Dakshina Kannada district.
The Congress party - after it’s victory - has claimed that people have rejected the idea of a JD(S)-BJP coalition government.
Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President M Mallikarjun Kharge and Opposition Congress leader in the state Assembly, N Dharam Singh, said, "People have expressed their anger over the style of functioning of the JD(S)-BJP combine which has been holding out only false promises. The verdict is a trendsetter for the coming general elections."
"The JD(S) which has been dreaming to become a political force at the national level has lost its deposit," he added, referring to the murky performance of the JD(S), which is led by former prime minister, H D Deve Gowda.
Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy, went all out to test his personal popularity, and has failed there, Singh said.
Congress candidate U T Abdul Khader defeated his BJP counterpart Chandrashekhar Uchil by more than 2,500 votes.
For Khader however, these elections were not an easy target to meet, especially since the BJP had been leading the tally till the fourth round.
The bypolls were held following the death of the sitting MLA and UT Khader's father, UT Fareed.
