CHENNAI: The Chennai Corporation is keen on improving infrastructure for sports in schools under its jurisdiction in the city. Apart from the schemes announced by the State government, the Corporation would also provide incentives for students who excel in sports, Mayor Saidai Duraisamy said here on Wednesday. Inaugurating the sports meet organised jointly by the Education Department and the Corporation, he said that he was aware of the constraints of space and infrastructure faced by the schools. However, he said sports was an important component in the overall development of a student’s personality and so, facilities for encouraging sportspersons would be created. Referring to the criticism mounted on the Corporation with regard to garbage clearance in the city, he said that alternative ways to the current method of garbage clearance and disposal was being looked into. Currently, waste is being collected in seven centres and then being taken to dump yards, he said. He also acknowledged that there was a delay in the process of clearance in certain areas which was being attended to with all seriousness. On the condition of the roads following the rains, he blamed the previous government for giving up on the scheme of laying plastic roads and pushing the city into a “pathetic state.” The idea was being revived now and every road would be provided with a sort of a lamination to extend its lifespan. The two-day sports meet will see thousands of students from 282 schools in the city competing in various athletic competitions. On Tuesday, the inauguration saw cultural performances put up by students.
