BANGALORE: Stars, planets, satellites, space travelling and aliens can grab the imagination of any child and make them wonder, what life is beyond our planet? How does the universe look? Are there aliens residing in space and watching us? There are so many unanswered questions flooding young minds.Answering all these questions and taking them on a journey into space is a scientist from Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), Nagraj Anant.Nagraj has been working with ISRO for the last 23 years. He also started a club called the ‘Galileo Science club’.On weekends, Nagraj visits various schools and colleges and introduces children to the fascinating world of satellites and space travel. With the aid of digital technology, he explains the functions of different kinds of satellites, talks about famous astronauts, elaborate on concepts related to space travel and gives exposure into space research. He started working with children two years ago when ‘Rajaraman Science Association’ invited him to deliver a guest lecture. That is when he realised the joy he got in interacting with kids and familiarising them with space.“I love teaching, it is a pleasure watching young eyes shine with curiosity and bewilderment. It has been a learning experience for me as well. I love researching and exploring on the answers in response to the innocent questions that they shoot at me. It helps in fine-tuning my knowledge as well. The study of space bodies is a very fascinating subject. Unfortunately, in our country, children do not have enough exposure about the avenues available in this field. I want to make them aware of this, so that our country can produce young and brilliant brains in the field of space research in the future. As a child, I never had that exposure, else I would have contributed even more in the field of space research. I want to give to these children what I did not have during my childhood,” said Nagraj.Until recently, Nagraj has visited 37 different schools and colleges and also dreams of establishing science clubs in rural areas. He wants to reach out to the remote places and introduce children to the world of space research as he feels, these children need more exposure in the field of technology, compared to others. On personal front, Nagaraj is a diploma holder in Electronics from SJ Polytechnic College and loves cartooning and poetry. He has written over 50 poems in Kannada and 30 in English. Nagraj lives with his family in Jai Prakash Nagar.Schools and colleges interested in educating their students about space science can contact Nagraj on his e-mail id, [email protected].
