THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The sports sector in the country needs to adopt modern trends which are being moulded in academies, Union Power Minister KC Venugopal has said. He was addressing the valedictory function of the international workshop on ‘Strength and Conditioning’ organised by Sports Authority of India (SAI), LNCPE, here on Saturday.All branches of conventional sports are undergoing evolution at sports academies. These developments have to be adopted for the betterment of sports in the country.The minister spoke about the alarming rise in lifestyle diseases in the country. In this background, sports have a great role to play in building up a healthy society.Highlighting the importance of putting ex-sportspersons at the helm of the State Sports Council, he said that it would be better if the governance of sports was left to sportspersons.Sports Council president Padmini Thomas presided over the function.The Union Minister later felicitated veteran rowing coach G S Nair. He also handed over mementos to Dr Carlo Buzzichelli and Magni Mohr, the expert sports scientists, who led the workshop. Olympian Wilson Cherian, Shiny Wilson, P S Abdul Razak, NSNIS executive director Dr L S Ranawat and Dr G Kishore also spoke at the occasion.
