KOCHI: Football-crazy Kerala will see young blood in action for two weeks from Monday to capture the glory of ‘Goal 2012,’ an initiative taken by The New Indian Express Group with a vision to raise youth power to the heights of world football. ‘Goal 2012’ has put its best foot forward with a prize money of Rs 1 lakh and the champion’s crown for the winning team and `50,000 for the runner-up. In addition, there will be cash incentives for the best players in various categories.The intercollegiate tournament, to be held at Maharaja’s College ground here from January 16 to 29 on a league-cum- knock-out basis, will feature the best 16 teams from four major universities in the state. The tournament will break fresh ground as it may be for the first time that some of these teams face each other.Union Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Ajay Maken will kick off the tournament at 2.15 pm on Monday. Public Works Minister V K Ibrahim Kunj, international footballers I M Vijayan and Joe Paul Ancherry will attend the function.Prior to the inauguration, the theme song of ‘Goal 2012’ will be released at Casino Hotel. Maken, Mayor Tony Chammany, Hibi Eden, MLA and New Indian Express Editorial Director Prabhu Chawla will be present.The 16 teams would be divided into four groups, from which the toppers will enter the semis. There will be two matches on all days - at 2.45 pm and 4.30 pm.The TNIE initiative is to instil football professionalism at the college level. This will also be a big opportunity for scouts from major clubs to spot young talent. The entry to the tournament is free.
