Chennai: Close on the heels of National Crime Records Bureau gave Chennai the dubious distinction of being the suicide capital of the country, the city recorded six suicides on Monday.
Police said a couple in Chromepet immolated after a quarrel while a woman police constable set herself on fire in Royapuram after a domestic fight. Two engineering students hung themselves, one of them purportedly due to love failure in Nungambakkam and another for flunking in exams in Perambur.
In another poignant tale, a 30-year-old man hung himself with his wife’s saree in Chitlapakkam a day after his wife and his one-year-old child died in an accident.
Was it love-gone-sour?
In Nungambakkam, 19-year-old Louis Kumar, son of Teynampet traffic sub-inspector Sebastian, hung himself in their second floor house at the police quarters. Police said they suspected it to be a case of love failure. His parents reportedly returned from Sebastian’s sister’s house at Kodambakkam around 9 pm on Sunday and found Kumar hanging from his bedroom fan. They had to break the door to gain access to the house after repeated knocks on the door did not evoke response from Kumar. The 19-year-old has an elder brother Stephen Pushparaj, police said.
According to his friends, Louis, a third year computer science engineering student in a popular city college, was bright in academics and was known to be friendly. “I knew him since his school days. He was very friendly with everyone,” said a shocked Antony, a friend of Louis.
While his parents and brother were inconsolable, his friends in the police quarters were in tears and visibly shocked at his death. “Even if he had any problems, he would never share them with us and always looked happy. We even spoke to him on Sunday morning and he looked okay and spoke normally,” said Prabha, one of his close friends in the quarters, as they prepared to put up posters in the locality for their departed friend.
Louis’ body was taken to his native village near Jay-ankondam in Ariyalur District after his friends paid their last respects.
Student takes life
Vigeshwar (20) of Kennedy Square Main Road, Perambur, reportedly took the extreme on Monday morning, as he was allegedly upset over failing in some subjects in his second semester exam, police said. They added that the second year B Tech student, who was upset, had locked himself up in his room after informing his father Gouthaman, a lawyer, that he was going to study.
He hung himself with a metal chain used for hanging the swing. His mother Sharmila was away from home and Gauthaman, who was ill and resting at home, called his father-in-law living in the ground floor after Vigeshwar failed to respond even after repeated knocks on the door. Together, they broke open the bedroom door with a cricket bat and found him hanging. Many of his classmates and teachers who came to see Vigeshwar at the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital mortuary broke down. Thiru Vi Ka Nagar police were investigating.
PC sets herself alight
In Royapuram, 32-year-old Sangeetha, a police constable working at the police control room, set herself on fire reportedly following a quarrel with her husband Velu (36) at the police quarters in Singarathottam, Royapuram.
Police said the woman, who had two young children, returned home after work on Sunday night had a fight with her husband. She dou-sed herself with kerosene and set herself afire even as her shocked husband attempted to rescue her.
Both were rushed to Kilpauk Medical College Hospital. The policewoman succumbed to injuries while Velu was being treated.
Couple immolate
At Chitlapakkam, 28-year-old Nagaraj, a private company employee from Gangai Amman Koil Street, Chr-omepet, set himself on fire while his wife, Sasikala alias Anitha (24), attempted in vain to rescue him.
Police said Nagaraj, who worked as a supervisor, wo-uld pass on instructions to his women colleagues which his wife did not like. The couple had frequent quarrels over it.
On Sunday night, the couple fought again when Sasikala threatened to commit suicide and doused herself with kerosene. Nagaraj immediately grabbed the kerosene can, poured it on himself and set himself on fire. A shocked Sasikala, who tried to rescue him, was cau-ght in the flames as she already had kerosene on her.
Neighbours rushed both to the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital where they succumbed to injuries on Monday morning. The couple’s four-year-old son Dinesh was away when the incident took place.
Inconsolable after wife, daughter’s death
In yet another tragic incident reported in Chitlapakkam, 30-year-old Rajendran hung himself inside his house on Purananooru Street, Anna Nagar, a day after his wife and his one-year-old daughter died in an accident.
Police said Rajendran hung himself in his room with his wife’s saree.
On Saturday, Rajendran, his wife Nithya Kalyani and daughter Vedasri were on their way to meet his in-laws at Maraimalainagar on a motorcycle when they were hit by a speeding vehicle.
The man was inconsolable as he hinted at ending his life after the final rites of his wife and daughter were performed, police said.
