Bangalore: Armed police are patrolling in Shivajinagar and Bharatinagar in Bangalore where at least 20 persons were injured on Friday during clashes at a demonstration against Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein’s execution.
Two persons have been arrested and around 400 police personnel have been deployed in the two places, which officials said are tense but under control.
Hundreds of people at the protest organised by former railway minister C K Jaffar Sharief threw stones, burnt vehicles and attacked police in Shivajinagar on Friday.
UNI reports the violence began when protesters accidentally burnt some banners while lighting an effigy of US President George W Bush. A Reuters report said the violence started when the demonstrators tried to force shopkeepers to close their shops in the communally sensitive area of Shivajinagar.
Police baton charged the protesters and later fired in the air.
''We are cautious as there is a public function organised by a religious organisation tomorrow. We want the situation to pass. The situation is well under control, police pickets are in place and patrolling is on,'' said Additional Commissioner of Police Bipin Gopalakrishna.
