The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has recently proposed a significant change in the academic structure for secondary and higher secondary education.
As per reports, the board is planning to increase the number of subjects in the 10th-grade syllabus. The revision in the number of subjects will add one language subject more which previously was two. Apart from this, the board is also considering revising the passing criteria for 10th grade. Now, the students will have to pass in 10 subjects, as opposed to the current requirement of five.
On the other hand, the board has considered a similar revision for the 12th-grade students as well. As per the reports, it is suggested that the students in the higher secondary will be required to study two language subjects rather than one, and it also includes the condition of having at least one native Indian language. Alongside, the student will be required to pass six subjects in the board examination which is currently five.
According to the Indian Express report, these significant moves are being proposed under the boards’ broader initiative to implement a national credit framework in the school education system. This aims to create an academic parity between vocational and general education. Eventually, this marks a smooth transition between the two educational systems, as outlined in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
Presently, there is no organised credit system in the traditional school curriculum. A full academic year is comprised of 1,200 notional learning hours, or 40 credits, according to the CBSE proposal.
Following the proposal, the three languages proposed for the 10th grade will include two native Indian languages as well. Apart from this, the other seven subjects will include Mathematics and Computation Thinking, Social Science, Art Education, Physical Education and well-being, Vocational Education, and Environmental Education.
The proposal also outlines the evaluation of the subjects, according to which all three languages, Mathematics and Computation Thinking, Social Science, and Environmental Education will be evaluated through the external examination. Whereas other subjects will be evaluated both externally and internally. However, students will have to pass in all the ten subjects.
