New Delhi: Markets ended on a positive note as hefty gains pushed BSE Sensex above 14,000 level on Wednesday. Profit-booking gained momentum during the final hour of the trade. Outperforming the frontline indices were the broader markets the mid-cap and the small-cap indices. The market breadth has been in favour of the advances and the turnover also picked up in the final hour of day.
Banking, whether mid-cap or small-cap showed leadership. Also media stocks were on fire and even some construction and real estate stocks closed higher. Except for IT, all the BSE sector indices closed in green.
Sensex closed up 197.98 points or 1.42 per cent at 14,127.31, and the Nifty was up 50.65 points or 1.23 per cent at 4,170.95. About 1586 shares have advanced, 971 shares declined, and 67 shares are unchanged.
The BSE Midcap Index ended at 6,041.33 up 86 points or 1.44%. BSE Smallcap Index ended at 7,205.96 up 103 points or 1.45%. BSE Bankex was up 3.1% at 7,413.32. Oriental Bank, SBI, ICICI Bank and Andhra Bank moved upwards. The Capital Goods Index was up 1.5% at 10,082.93. Alfa Laval, Gammon India, BHEL, KEC Infrastructure and SKF India closed higher.
The BSE Health Care Index was up 0.2% at 3,721.93. Wyeth, Matrix Lab, FDC, Glenmark and Nicholas Pirama closed higher.
The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 10,668.92 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 32,810.52 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 5,157.33 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 48,636.77 crore.
