Mumbai: Industry captains and bank chiefs on Saturday joined the din to congratulate Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee for being nominated as ruling UPA's candidate for the next President.
At a financial sector event in Mumbai, leaders of banking and corporate world queued up to garland Mukherjee – a scene that reminded many of the political rallies in the South, which is known for life-size garlands and cut-outs.
LIC chairman D K Mehrotra, Bank of Baroda chairman MD Mallya, Corporation Bank chief Ajai Kumar were among those who wished Mukherjee all the success.
Assocham president Rajkumar N Dhoot said, "Dear Finance Minister, oh sorry the future President of India. We thank you for taking time off and coming over."
Mukherjee was unmoved by praise heaped on him as his speech focussed on the core agenda for the day – financial inclusion and the macroeconomic concerns plaguing the country in particular and the world in general.
Meanwhile in New Delhi, M Rafeeque Ahmed, President, Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO), said exporters look forward to Mukherjee's elevation to the coveted post of President.
"Mukherjee has wide and rich experience of working in key ministries and his exposure in commerce, finance and external affairs made him a visionary. Pranab Da as we popularly call him has contributed significantly to exports which crossed the milestone of $300 billion last fiscal," he said in a statement.
