Kareena Kapoor Khan marked her entry into the film industry two decades ago with her debut in JP Dutta’s ‘Refugee’. Over her 25-year career, she has navigated through significant highs and lows, including notable box office failures. Kareena openly acknowledges that she encountered more failures than successes until her career-defining role as Geet in Imtiaz Ali’s ‘Jab We Met’, a film that became a turning point in her acting journey. During an appearance on The Ranveer Show, she discussed how she faced numerous failures before the success of ‘Jab We Met’ and even went a year without work due to the disappointment of her previous films.
Kareena shared the emotional toll these professional setbacks took on her, often leading her to question her abilities and endure her pain in silence. Despite feeling deeply affected by her film’s performances, she maintained a stoic facade, hiding her struggles from the public eye to uphold the perceived image of a star. She said, “I was very upset. I was traumatized, I would cry myself to sleep for so many nights thinking, ‘Why are my films not working? What is happening?’ People were like she is so good but that one turn, which I needed, was not happening. If it happened to anybody else, nobody would have survived it. Nobody talks about it (dealing with failure) because there is a certain perception about stars and I have never let people feel what I was going through because I had been good in those films or I might have worked very hard for those roles.”
She reflected on the intrinsic challenges of the acting profession, describing it as ‘daunting’, ‘demanding’ and ‘selfish’, where personal struggles are often overshadowed by the demands of the job. Kareena highlighted the lack of empathy and support within the industry for actors going through tough times, emphasizing the relentless expectation to perform regardless of personal circumstances, “There is no room to feel any emotion. You have to make sure you are just being a perfect star. I may have had a fight with my mother or son and I might be feeling terrible and so many other things could go wrong at that time, but you just have to be in front of the camera and that’s what makes the profession demanding. Somebody could be dying but if you’re in front of the camera. That’s it,” she added.
On the professional front, her upcoming film Crew is all set to release on March 29. The film also stars Kriti Sanon and Tabu in key roles. The trailer shows Kriti, Kareena and Tabu disguised as air hostesses, performing humorous acts and getting into hilarious situations as they deal with the tribulations of their airline’s bankruptcy. Despite the pandemonium, their close bond emerges as they overcome each obstacle.
The film also stars Kapil Sharma and Diljit Dosanjh.
