One Dead in Israeli Strike in South Lebanon: State Media

An Israeli strike on a car in southern Lebanon killed one person Sunday, Lebanese state media said, as the Gaza war stokes tensions between Israel and Hamas ally Hezbollah.

Since the outbreak of war between Hamas and Israel on October 7, the Lebanese-Israeli border has witnessed a near daily exchange of fire between Israel’s army and Lebanon’s Shiite movement Hezbollah.

“The strike that targeted a car in Kafra killed one person while others suffered moderate and minor injuries,” Lebanon’s official National News Agency said.

Kafra is a village not far from the Israeli border.

The strike was carried out by an Israeli drone close to an army checkpoint, destroying a four-wheel drive vehicle and setting another vehicle on fire, NNA said.

A security source told AFP no Lebanese soldiers had been injured or killed in the strike.

Hezbollah is backed by Iran, Israel’s regional arch-foe.

There have also been rising tensions and violence involving Iran-backed groups in Iraq, Syria and Yemen, stoking fears of a wider conflagration.

Israel has repeatedly bombarded Lebanese border villages, with the violence killing more than 195 people in the country, including at least 143 Hezbollah fighters, according to an AFP tally.

On the Israeli side, 15 people have been killed, of whom nine were soldiers and six civilians, according to the Israeli army.
