If all goes well with the Tripunithura Centre for Heritage Studies(CHS) plans, the wild growth on the Hill Palace premises will give way to a spectacle of colours this December.
The CHS, in association with the Tripunithura municipality, is planning a flower show as part of an initiative to spread awareness on flowers that are unique to Kerala, and in turn attract more tourists to the museum.
In an essential difference from other flower shows, the Hill Palace flower show will be arranged in an expanse of 52 acres, said CHS academic affairs dean M G Sasibhooshan.
“Flowering plants, including medicinal plants and decorative flowers found in Kerala, will be displayed in the show. Visitors can walk around the Hill Palace premises to watch the floral extravaganza,” he said.
He also added that more than increasing the tourism-related revenue of the Hill Palace, the flower show aims to draw attention to the flowers in Kerala.
“There are flowers which are used for preparing various Ayurvedic medicines. Flowers are also used while performing various prayers in temples and churches. But now, people in Kerala have become unfamiliar with Kerala-specific flowers and have turned to the orchid culture. Foreign flowers are taking the place of local flowers in our gardens. This flower show will help to make people aware of how beautiful our flowers are,” he said.
Meanwhile, Tripunithura municipal chairman R Venugopal said that various facets of organising a flower show on such a largescale are being discussed.
“The flower show will definitely attract more tourists to Hill Palace. Discussions are going on and a final decision will be taken within a month. If the venture is a success, we will try to develop it into a major flower show in Kerala with annual shows,” he said.
