As winter sets in, migratory birds flock to India, with Rajasthan emerging as a favoured destination, particularly for millions of Siberian birds. Among these migratory species are gulls, colloquially known as seagulls, which are drawn to Rajasthan for its salty food offerings. These birds can often be spotted frolicking along the banks of rivers and ponds in the region.

Gulls are medium- to large-sized birds characterised by their grey or white plumage, often adorned with black patterns on their wings or heads and possessing webbed feet. Primarily ground-nesting carnivores, especially the Larus species, gulls exhibit opportunistic feeding behaviours, preying on live food or scavenging for sustenance. Their diet typically includes crustaceans, molluscs, fish and small birds.

Renowned for their adaptability, gulls are unique in their ability to navigate seamlessly across land, water and air. One distinctive feature is their desalination gland located above their nose, enabling them to consume both salty and fresh water. These salt glands, connected to their bills, aid in regulating their body’s salt levels, allowing them to ingest seawater or consume prey with high salt content.

Highly opportunistic feeders, seagulls thrive on a diverse array of food sources. In recent years, they have been frequenting the Chambal River and Kota Barrage during winter months, attracted by the availability of salty food. While their primary diet comprises fish, crabs and insects, locals often supplement their nutrition by feeding them flour balls.

The lesser black-backed gull and brown-headed gull are among the prominent species observed in the region, with approximately a thousand birds visiting annually for the salty fare. Regarded as intelligent creatures, seagulls exhibit intriguing behaviours, including a unique method of hunting known as ‘worm charming.’ During rainfall, white-coloured seagulls rhythmically stomp their feet on the ground, creating vibrations that lure earthworms to the surface, facilitating easy prey capture.

As temperatures rise in March, these migratory visitors will soon depart for their native habitats. Nature promoter A. H. Zaidi highlighted the significance of feeding practices at Kota Barrage and Chambal River, showing the importance of maintaining a balanced diet for the well-being of these avian guests. Seagulls, with their remarkable adaptability and behavioural quirks, continue to captivate observers with their presence in the region’s diverse ecosystems.
