Watch: Mark Zuckerberg Unveils Revolutionary Travel Mode For Meta Quest Headsets
Following in the footsteps of Apple Vision Pro, Meta Quest 3 now has a travel mode, which lets users have mixed reality experiences.

Meta introduced its latest Virtual Reality (VR) gadget, the Quest 3 in 2023. This isn’t just an upgrade from the Quest 2, it blends virtual reality with mixed reality, much like Apple’s Vision Pro. This means users can be aware of their real surroundings while using the device. Recently, Meta’s CEO, Mark Zuckerberg, revealed a groundbreaking feature on Instagram for Meta Quest headsets. Following in the footsteps of Vision Pro, both Quest 3 and Quest 2 now have a travel mode. This innovative feature lets users switch from typical in-flight entertainment to mixed reality experiences while on the move. While relaxing in your seat, enjoy a movie on a virtual cinema screen larger than the plane’s display, play games or complete pending work, all without the usual airplane distractions.

Zuckerberg hinted at this feature previously, but his recent post shows him giving users a firsthand look at its capabilities. The new travel mode is designed specifically for airplanes, making the headset convenient to use while traveling. In the video shared by Zuckerberg, the headset performs well even during a flight and isn’t disturbed by the plane’s motion. As per the video, the user could stream videos or music, play games and even shop while being on air.

Reacting to the clip, a user noted, “Love how the jet has blue seats like Meta.”

Another wrote, “Bro watching UFC in VR on a PJ, every man’s dream.”

“Wow that’s really amazing Mark,” a comment read.

An individual shared, “So handy for those long flights.”

Another suggested, “Okay that’s a great application, maybe sell direct to airlines as an amenity?”

One more added, “I get goosebumps when I see gadgets like this just shows how far we can go.”

According to Meta’s blog, “Say you’re on a flight with complimentary Wi-Fi and a selection of movies and TV shows you can enjoy on your tablet or laptop. Your Quest might detect the airline Wi-Fi, prompt you to join the network and automatically launch the browser so you can kick back, relax, and enjoy the show. Plus you’ll have access to your library of Quest content. We specially tuned our algorithms to account for the motion of an airplane, so you’ll have a stable and consistent experience in Travel Mode—even when looking out the window.”

Besides travel mode, Meta has teamed up with German airline Lufthansa to provide business class passengers with custom mixed reality content. This includes cinema experience featuring a library of movies and TV shows, spatial video podcasts from well known travel podcasters, interactive games and the option to explore travel destinations from a bird’s eye view.
