This species of butterfly is called the Indian Oakleaf or Orange Oakleaf, with its scientific name being Kallima Inachus.

In the vast ecosystem of our planet, we are hardly aware of all types of life forms that exist or their incredible abilities. Some creatures have extraordinary characteristics like the Venus flytrap, a carnivorous plant that is capable of hunting or chameleons that can camouflage themselves to hide from their potential prey. But did you know that certain species of butterfly can camouflage themselves too? In this article, we will show you a video that depicts a butterfly camouflaging itself to resemble a dried leaf.

The short video starts with a butterfly with its wings wide open, resembling a colourful apex, an orange discal band and a deep blue base. However, as soon as the butterfly closes its wings, it transforms completely into a dry leaf. The transformation is so smooth that it is almost difficult to believe.

The caption of the video shared on Instagram reads, “Butterflies fascinate us with their stunning colours and intricate patterns, while also demonstrating their incredible camouflaging abilities in nature. Dive into the world of these winged wonders and discover the magic of their beauty and moulding skills”. Take a look at the amazing video:

Shared from Instagram’s Furbabiesplus account, this video has been viewed by more than 4,22,000 people so far and has received more than 22 thousand likes. Let us tell you that this species of butterfly is called the Indian Oakleaf or Orange Oakleaf, with its scientific name being Kallima Inachus. It is found all over tropical Asia, from India to Japan.

When closed, the butterfly’s wings resemble a leaf. In this position, only the underside with its camouflage markings is visible, showing irregular patterns and streaks in various shades of beige, buff, brown, yellow and black. The darkened veins mimic those of a leaf. This realistic imitation of a dried leaf has earned the butterfly its common name, oakleaf or dead leaf.
