In what appeared to be a case of alleged racism and temper fury, a US woman was seen attacking her Uber driver in a fit of anger and using pepper spray on him. According to the New York Post, 23-year-old Jennifer Guilbeault, who was riding in the back seat of an Uber with another woman, pepper-sprayed the driver’s eye forcing him to get out of the car. The viral video was reported from the Manhattan area and the incident reportedly took place on July 30, 2024.
Days after the attack, the video sparked a public outcry with nearly 12,09,000 views on X. Several users have come out in support of the driver calling the woman’s actions a case of blatant racism.
Sharing the video, an X handle wrote, “Woman randomly maces Uber driver ‘because he’s brown.” Another user wrote, “So much racism out there smh.”
Another user commented, “Omg that poor friend was so confused. I’m glad she didn’t immediately stick up for her friend and was just totally shocked by what she did and why she did it. Glad her friend can actually stay neutral.”
However, some have also questioned what might have caused her violent outburst. “I’d like to see what led up to this, if he did inappropriate things, yes, but if it’s just because of his race no,” a third user reacted.
According to reports, Guilbeault was taken into custody and charged with third-degree assault. Post the attack, Uber, too, has issued a statement in support of the driver condemning the attack.
An Uber spokesperson said. “The rider’s actions shown in the video are deplorable. Violence is not tolerated, and the rider has been banned from the Uber platform. We will support the police in their investigation however we can.”
