In an interview with Karan Thapar, Tata was asked if he ever seriously considered marriage.“Did you never think of getting married?" asked Karan Thapar. Tata replied, “Yes, I did and came close several times."

When Thapar pressed the 63-year-old about why it didn’t happen, Tata explained, “Different things went wrong at different times. Usually, the pressure of work and the feeling that domestic life is secondary to my work life were usually the reasons that things didn’t work out."

“Will you still consider getting married?" Thapar asked.

“I don’t think it’s too late to do anything. If the right person were there and I had the right feelings, I would certainly do so," the tech titan answered thoughtfully.

Ratan Tata on almost marrying a US woman

In a candid conversation with CNN, Tata shared a personal story about nearly marrying a woman in the US, which was thwarted by the India-China conflict.

“One was probably the most serious when I was working in the US. The only reason we didn’t get married was that I came back to India, and she was supposed to follow me. But that was the year of the Indo-Chinese conflict, and in true American fashion, this conflict in the Himalayas, in the snowy uninhabited part, was seen in the United States as a major war between India and China. So, she didn’t come, and finally married [someone else] in the US thereafter," Tata shared.

Reflecting on why he never married, Tata confessed, “I came seriously close to getting married four times. And each time, it got close to that stage, and I guess I backed off in fear for one reason or another. But in hindsight, when I look at the people involved, maybe it wasn’t a bad thing that I did. Marriage might have made things more complex."

Ratan Tata on loneliness

Actor Simi Garewal once revealed that she had dated Ratan Tata. He became her first friend in Mumbai when both had returned from abroad. In an interview with Garewal, Tata spoke openly about his mixed feelings on not having a wife or family. “There are many times that I feel lonely about not having a wife or a family, and sometimes I long for it. Sometimes I enjoy the freedom of not having to worry about the feelings of someone else or the concerns of someone else. On other times, it does get a little lonely," Tata admitted.
