Kindness can often be found in the most unexpected places and a recent thread on X beautifully highlighted this truth. A user with the moniker Yappy Hour shared her experiences during a visit to Mumbai, revealing how the city’s residents helped her fall in love with the place. She kicked off her thread by declaring that the people in Mumbai are “the nicest strangers” she has ever met, which goes against the common advice of “don’t talk to strangers.”
people in mumbai are like… the nicest strangers i've ever met— yappy hour (@yappy_hour) October 2, 2024
they're basically the opposite of “don’t talk to strangers” advice— yappy hour (@yappy_hour) October 2, 2024
Yappy Hour recounted how a girl she met on her train ride became her “unofficial tour guide for the day.” Despite only knowing her for a couple of hours, this stranger showed her the best spots to street shops and even helped her book local train tickets.
this girl i met on my train ride to mumbai basically became my unofficial tour guide for the day. i told her i had like 8 hours to kill before my flight & she’s showing where to street shop, booking local train tix for me like i didn’t just meet her 2 hours ago…— yappy hour (@yappy_hour) October 2, 2024
Her encounters with kind strangers continued as she navigated across the city. In the thread, she mentioned another girl who noticed her looking lost on the Mumbai local.
“Then this other girl saw that I was lost in the Mumbai local & didn’t know when Andheri station was coming. So, she offered to not only tell me when to get down from the local, but also helped me book a metro ticket to get from Andheri train stn to airport road and dropped me off at the metro platform,” she wrote.

so she offered to not only tell me when to get down from the local, but also helped me book a metro tix to get from andheri train stn to airport road and dropped me off at the metro platform ????— yappy hour (@yappy_hour) October 2, 2024
Another touching moment came when the user found herself lost again at the airport road. A kind man noticed her confusion and negotiated with an auto driver to get her a ride to the airport for just Rs 40 instead of Rs 150. He even accompanied her to the airport and bought her a coffee because he wanted “someone to celebrate the fact that his son finally called him after 8 years.”
& then at airport road, i was lost again bcs how tf am i supposed to get to the airport 2 kms away from the airport road metro station? & that’s when i met yet ANOTHER kind stranger— yappy hour (@yappy_hour) October 2, 2024
this uncle saw i was lost, bargained w the auto driver to take me to the airport for 40 rs instead of 150, came w me till the airport and even bought me coffee bcs he wanted someone to celebrate the fact that his son finally called him after 8 years— yappy hour (@yappy_hour) October 2, 2024
At the airport, the user was surprised to be upgraded to a window seat for free. In another instance, instead of “forcing” her to buy a new water bottle for Rs 150, the shopkeeper kindly gave her a bottle for free.
and then at the airport, i got upgraded to a window seat for free! then, instead of the lady at the shop trying to force me to buy a new water bottle for 150 rs, she filled my water bottle for me for free!!— yappy hour (@yappy_hour) October 2, 2024
She concluded her post with, “Mumbai really knows how to treat people, man.”

Her wholesome thread inspired other users to share their own uplifting experiences with kind strangers in Mumbai.
One user reminisced, “This was true even 22 year back when I was learning to navigate the local train and stations. I had come from Delhi and had people walk for a couple of mins to show me the local counter. In Delhi, the answer to every query on direction used to be ‘aage se right’.”

Another mentioned, “Decades ago, I lost my wallet while getting on a local train from Andheri and thought it was a case of pickpocketing. Was a student then so it was pretty distressing. Got a call from a man the same day who found it, he came to my place the next day and handed it over to me.”

“True.. My initial days in Mumbai when I tried to get in a local train and almost fell due to the crowd, one of the girls inside the train caught my hand and pulled me in.. don’t remember her face now but will be thankful to her for ever,” a commenter recalled.

Someone shared a touching experience from 2018, noting, “Phone had no battery. New to city & raining.Dependent on Uber and Google maps. Stranger gives me his power bank. Tell me that I trust you will be here when I am back in 20 mins. Came back, I said thanks. He said don’t worry. Will never forget.”
