Indian TV soap operas are full of theatrics and over-the-top dialogues. While millions of people enjoy watching them in India, these shows also have a large following in the foreign countries. Popular TV series are often dubbed in other languages to cater to the locals. Now a video that shows an Indian TV soap dubbed in French is going viral. A popular X (Formerly Twitter) account shared this clip of the dubbed show and wrote, “Local TV has Indian Saas Bahu drama translated into French. To serve Indian origin people who have forgotten Bhojpuri but are fluent in French."
The dubbed show was being aired on local French TV channel Antenne Réunion. This 31-second clip has over two lakh views and over 1,000 likes. In the comments, many people admitted to watching Indian soap operas with dubbing on various foreign TV networks. Many also noted that in African countries that were once French colonies, Indian shows are routinely dubbed in French.

An X user shared, “I was pleasantly surprised a couple of years back when I was in France when someone from Senegal mentioned to me that a lot of them watch these Indian dramas dubbed into French on YouTube, small world huh."
Another recalled, “In South Africa they have all the old soaps translated into English. My house help used to enjoy them a lot. She was very sad when SSR passed away as she had seen him in the dubbed soaps."
An account remarked, “In Indonesia, they are dubbed in bhasa. They cater not to Indians who dont understand Hindi but also to the local population." Deeming TV dramas as a positive cultural export, an X user wrote, “Good at least they are getting to know India through this. Like many learn about America through Hollywood movies and TV Series." Expressing astonishment, a user asserted, “Is This Real."
Often dubbing movies or shows in another language results in unintended comedy. Back in 2018, the makers of Deadpool 2 released its trailer in Hindi for the Indian audience. It made references to Indian movies like Dangal, Sultalm and Baahubali.
After Deadpool 2’s Hindi trailer launch, many people joked that they would especially watch the superhero film for its comedic dubbing. Commenting on its Hindi trailer, a YouTube user wrote, “2019 … and the Oscar Nomination for Perfect Dubbing Goes to Deadpool 2." Another commented, “The dubbing made the trailer awesome!!!!!!!!"
