Have you ever wondered which ones are the windiest places on Earth? This is determined by how the wind speed of that particular place is quantified. Today, let’s take a look at some of the windiest places on earth.
1. Wellington, New Zealand:
New Zealand’s Wellington, which is located in the very bottom of its North Island, is one of the windiest places on Earth. Here, the Roaring 40s winds whip across the Pacific, squeezing across the tiny Cook Strait that separates the South and North Islands, before reaching Wellington. In Wellington, the average wind speed is between 16 and 17 mph, with the highest recorded gust reaching 150 mph.
2. Commonwealth Bay, Antarctica:
According to the Guinness Book of World Records and National Geographic Atlas Commonwealth Bay, Antarctica makes it to the list of windiest places on the planet. In Commonwealth Bay, katabatic winds often reach speeds of exceeding 150 mph; the average yearly wind speed is 50 mph.
3. Gruissan, France:
Gruissan is located on the Mediterranean coast of Southern France. It is traditionally a fishing village, the circular town is built around the former castle and is very windy indeed. The Tramontane, a fierce wind from the Northwest, is the predominant wind in Gruissan. There are 300 days a year on average in Gruissan with winds over 18 mph.
4. Dodge City, Kansas:
Chicago is most popularly known as the Windy City, although a lot of evidence indicates that there are many American cities with harsher winds, such as Dodge City, Kansas. The average wind speed here is 14 mph.
5. Newfoundland, Canada:
Newfoundland as a whole has the strongest winds of any Canadian province with gusts of over 30 mph recorded on an average of 47 days each year. Of all the main Canadian cities, the centre of Newfoundland experiences the biggest quantity of precipitation and the majority of overcast, foggy days. As per reports, during the winter months wind chills can be a real issue with blizzards sweeping the country at -25°C.
