'Everyone Talking Of IITs': Microsoft Techie Shares Tips For Job Seekers
Amid the IIT-Bombay placement debate, a Microsoft techie raised an important point for job seekers.

The recent reports of around 36% of IIT Bombay students not finding placement this season have stirred a debate about the employment of engineering graduates in India. Amid the debate over the poor placement of engineering graduates, a Microsoft employee has shared his tips for students to secure a job while drawing attention to the larger problem of 10 lakh students graduating from engineering colleges across the country every year. Nishant Chahar wrote on LinkedIn, “Sure, everyone’s talking about IIT Bombay’s placement stats, but let’s not forget about the ten lakh+ students graduating this year."

“IIT Bombay students will somehow find a job (if they need to) and many companies will be ready to roll out offers to them. But what about students from tier-3 colleges? Who constitute the majority of the engineering students?" he asked. “Unfortunately, skills can’t solve the problem of unemployment."

Nishant Chahar went on to offer some sage advice for job seekers. “Don’t run blindly for FAANG, Remote, or any kind of jobs," he said. “The economy is tough, so you had better be ready to adapt. Then, after getting into the industry, you’ll get ample opportunities to switch, and it gets a little easier with experience. Do your best, learn skills, and your efforts will definitely pay off."

FAANG is an acronym for five of the most influential technology companies in the world – Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Netflix and Google.

Nishant Chahar’s post soon went viral. One user agreed with the Microsoft employee, noting that “instead of going for FAANG companies one should find a Job first and may switch it later as placements are very uncertain in today’s world."

Another user echoed, saying, we should never focus on CTC. “In today’s era as a fresher from tier 3 college getting a job is very difficult," they said.

Someone else advised, “Focusing on gaining skills and finding the best job opportunity available is key in today’s tough economy."

According to a recent report by Forbes, there is some hope for India’s job market. The latest data from the National Sample Survey Survey (NSSO), says there has been a notable decrease in the unemployment rate, particularly among individuals aged 15 years and above in urban areas. The unemployment rate has seen a decline to 6.8% during January-March 2023, down from the 8.2% recorded in the previous year.
